Scroll back through time
Press ⌥⌘T from anywhere and your past fills the screen. Scroll, drag, or use the arrow keys to move through minutes, hours, or months. Press space to hear what was said at that moment.
OpenRewind remembers everything you’ve seen and heard on your screen. Search any word, or scroll back to any moment. It runs entirely on your own machine, costs nothing, and the code is yours to read.
$0, forever. No account, no subscription, no cloud.
What it does
You read hundreds of pages, chats, and docs a day, and hear hours of calls. OpenRewind keeps all of it, so the thing you half remember is always one search away.

Text is read straight from each app’s accessibility tree, with on-device OCR as a backup, then indexed for instant full-text search.
Your mic and your computer’s audio are transcribed by Whisper on your own machine. Meetings and videos show up in the same search as screen text.
Pick the apps it should never see, like password managers, banking and private browsing. They’re blurred in every screenshot and their text is never saved.
Keep recordings for a day, a year, or until you delete them. Wipe the last 15 minutes, today, or everything in one click.
Your history is SQLite and JPEGs in one folder. Back it up, move it, or open it with any tool you like.
Free and open source
Screen memory apps have been sold, shut down, and switched off before, taking people’s history with them. OpenRewind is built so that can’t happen. The code is public under the MIT license, the data lives in plain files on your disk, and there’s nothing to pay for.
Every feature. Every platform. Forever.
How it works
Every 2 seconds OpenRewind takes a snapshot, and throws it away if nothing changed. Mic and system audio are saved in 30-second chunks, and silence is dropped.
Text is pulled from the focused window, falling back to on-device OCR. Audio is transcribed by local Whisper. No server ever sees it.
Everything lands in a full-text index on your disk. Search it from the timeline or the menu bar.

FAQ
Yes. There’s no trial, no paid plan, and no account. It’s open source under the MIT license, so you can use it, share it, and change it however you like.
No. Screenshots, audio, transcripts, and the search index all stay in one folder on your disk. Speech is turned into text on your own computer, and the built-in search page can only be opened from your own computer.
Frames that didn’t change are skipped and silent audio is dropped, which keeps it small. You can also have older recordings deleted automatically after a day, week, month, or year.
Password fields, the lock screen and the screen saver are never recorded. The first time you open OpenRewind it asks which apps and websites to block, with password managers, money apps, private browsing windows and bank websites already ticked. Blocked apps and sites are blurred wherever they are on screen and their text is never saved, and you can change the list anytime in Settings → Blocked Apps & Sites. You can also pause screen or audio recording from the menu.
No. OpenRewind is new, independent code inspired by the idea of rewinding your screen. It isn’t made by or connected to Rewind AI, Limitless, or Meta.
Please do. Issues, ideas, and pull requests are all welcome on GitHub.
